"When God Winks"

My sister gave me this book by Squire Rushnell after our father passed 18 years ago, and from that time I looked at every challenge in my professional and personal life differently. It's been 36 years since I entered my nursing career and though the emergence of HIV was stressful, this year I will say tops them all. Though this year has been the most challenging, I couldn't have been more proud of my profession than this year. It was every challenging moment that I've experienced that has made me a stronger, more confident Nurse and allowed me to continue to advocate for those that I care for, and those that I guide to care. My Faith, Family, and Friends nourish my soul everyday. I love experimenting with plants and have the ability to do so in the assisted living, that is my outlet while at work, I now have several residents who enjoy the snippings as well, inspirational music has also provided guidance when I most needed it.

Hi Alissa:

Thanks for joining our conversation. I love the idea of connecting with your residents through your love of plants!

Have you seen other effective approaches to managing stress and encouraging resilience in your workplace? What else is working?

Oddly enough it's been very basic things, at least to me. When my employer refused to reorder the disposable caps I had in supply, I began to wear the surgical caps from an online uniform site. My staff admired them, residents complimented as well so I purchased some for my care staff and they love them, with each new one as they received Christmas ones yesterday I remind them of how much I appreciate them for hanging in through this storm.
